Talk description
Title:
Real Quantum Computing
Short synopsis:
This is the story of what is going on in the world of quantum computing and what previously intractable real world problems will potentially become solvable. I will give some detailed demonstrations of how to write quantum code and how to execute the quantum code on real quantum computers. I’ll finish with a demonstration of Shor’s algorithm and a cautionary tale of why we should be worried about encryption now.

Long synopsis (optional):
Quantum computers are real and I have used them. I have been studying quantum computing since I saw a talk on the subject back in the Spring of 2018. Since then I've been to dozens of talks at conferences and meetups, written my own quantum programs, spoken at various conferences on the subject, organised a quantum hack day (when we had priority access to the IBM quantum computers) and been tasked with creating the quantum strategy for ThoughtWorks so that we are in a position to help to shape the coming quantum revolution. This is the story of what is going on in the world of quantum computing and what previously intractable real world problems will potentially become solvable. I will give some detailed demonstrations of how to write quantum code and how to execute the quantum code on real quantum computers, not just simulators. I’ll finish with a demonstration of Shor’s algorithm and a cautionary tale of why we should be worried about encryption now.
