Talk description
Title:
Kanban, Flow Control and the Theory of Constraints
Short synopsis:
When you are asked to lead an "Agile" team and you find a total lack of understanding of the culture and ethos of Agile, what do you do? I found myself in this situation recently. How could we raise the Agile awareness in the team without alienating ourselves from the individuals we were trying to help? "Agile 101" was not an option here. The solution we came up with was to present "Kanban, Flow Control and the Theory of Constraints" to the group. After our successful, under the radar, introduction to Agile we realised that the messages were not specific to software delivery. We took the idea and the presentation to the wider business and started to slowly see positive change spreading.

Long synopsis (optional):
When you are asked to lead an "Agile" team and you find a total lack of understanding of the culture and ethos of Agile, what do you do? I found myself in this situation recently. How could we raise the Agile awareness in the team without alienating ourselves from the individuals we were trying to help? "Agile 101" was not an option here. The solution we came up with was to present "Kanban, Flow Control and the Theory of Constraints" to the group. I collaborated with colleagues to create an introduction to Agile which was pretending to be something else entirely. There was no direct mention of Agile practices or rituals. The emphasis was on the culture of Continual improvement, focus on value delivering activities and understanding what the most important task is. After our successful, under the radar, introduction to Agile we realised that the messages were not specific to software delivery. We took the idea and the presentation to the wider business and started to slowly see positive change spreading. Our client is a large public sector organisation which exhibits all of the usual problems of such organisations. This is the story of how we first helped to turn an under performing software delivery team into a productive one before challenging other business areas to apply the same thought processes to their work.
