Talk description
Title:
What Could Socrates Teach us about Agile?
Short synopsis:
Socrates was fond of comparing the Athenian culture to that of its rivals, particularly Sparta. He contrasted the dynamic, learning society of Athens with the static, closed, intolerant culture of Sparta. How did their respective attitudes to acquiring new knowledge affect their long term prospects and what does our knowledge about the ultimate fate of both cultures tell us about the prospects of businesses who chose open learning cultures against those that choose defensive, closed cultures?

Long synopsis (optional):
I have reflected on my time at ThoughtWorks and the path of learning this has taken me down. After nearly 4 years, dozens of books, at least 6 major clients and, more recently, talking at many major conferences I have started to think about how the nature of knowledge and how it is propagated can affect what happens within the enterprise. I would love to share my own learning journey, the insights gained from how this has been achieved whilst continuing to work full time as a lead consultant at ThoughtWorks. I am drawing on the writings of Plato and Xenophon, Dawkins and David Deutsch to create a hypothesis about the nature of memetic knowledge, how it can affect a modern enterprise through behaviours of its staff and the processes that can themselves encapsulate memetic knowledge. I will be drawing on specific case studies from my time at ThoughtWorks to support my hypothesis.
