Talk description
Title:
The Lonely Servant Leader
Short synopsis:
This is my story from Scrum Master to Agile Coach, and how I’ve avoided becoming “The Lonely Servant Leader”. Ever wondered what’s really meant by Servant Leader? How it actually feels to be a Servant Leader? Do you wonder how productive you’ve actually been? - and that the day has got away from you without anything tangible to show for it? I used to have these feelings. I used to feel guilty about purposefully stepping away, not giving the answer, not feeling helpful and finishing some days thinking it had been a washout in terms of what I could show people I had achieved. Together we’ll explore how to improve any negative feelings you have around being a Servant Leader. You will take away how I’ve learned to put being a Servant Leader into perspective and champion the work I do as an Agile Coach - and how you too can champion the great work you do for your team!

Long synopsis (optional):
At Holiday Extras, we’ve evolved our role from Scrum Masters to Agile Coaches (as I’ve detailed here on our tech blog https://tech.holidayextras.com/scrum-master-to-agile-coach-to-agile-coach-b846d9ebb3d) Certainly as Scrum Masters, and initially in our Agile Coach role, we were typical Servant Leaders. We later went on to redefine our Agile Coach role, supporting more and more teams from a distance. In this talk I’ll look at the history of the term Servant Leader, the qualities and skill sets it takes to be one as well as how it feels to be in that role. Then I’ll dive deeper into the roles of Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches in relation to being Servant Leaders. I’ll go on to explore how those roles can lead to a lonely path and one where it’s hard to justify what you’ve done day-to-day and truly feel productive, and feel you are adding value. I’d like to pause and give you the opportunity to think about how this feels and how you might go about finding ways to remove negative feelings you have around being a Servant Leader. I’ll close by summarising how we’ve worked to champion, celebrate success and review challenges so we don’t fall into the trap of becoming The Lonely Servant Leader - and how you too can champion the great work you do for your team!
