Title:
From an idea, to a priortised backlog... the art of a backlog!
Short synopsis:
In this interactive workshop attendees will work in small groups, using a selection of different techniques, taking an idea and transforming it into small, deliverable slices. Attendees will be able to take an idea and collaborate with both stakeholders and development teams to come to an agreed programme of work. Learning points: How to take an idea and slice this into deliverables by using a technique called User Story Mapping An overview of two different estimation techniques and how to apply them To understand the value of deliverables by using the Cost of Delay Matrix How to prioritise a backlog based on estimates and value, using a technique called Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF) How to effectively collaborate with stakeholders and development teams to agree a prioritised backlog.

Long synopsis (optional):
Have you ever wondered, how can I get value out of something sooner? Have you ever estimated a piece of work and wondered, what have I got to support me in this decision? Have you ever struggled to get agreement from stakeholders around priorities? Hopefully this half a day workshop will help answer some of these questions by using tools and techniques from best practices within the community. The two-hour workshop will begin with attendees being split into small groups of four or five people to represent a small SCRUM team, so they can get a feel for how these techniques can be used within a group and can be applied to everyday work. The groups will then be asked to create as many tasks as possible, based on an everyday scenario like “Getting Ready for Work”. This will allow all experience levels to be considered by stripping back the task and keeping it non-technical or job specific. Once groups are happy with generating as many tasks down as possible, they will carry out a technique called User Story Mapping, whereby they’ll split their tasks down to a minimal viable product (MVP). The MVP will then be used for the groups to estimate in story points, by using a tool called Planning Poker. This will start to form the basis to of a prioritised backlog. Once estimated, the groups will use a Value Matrix to understand the value of a task. This, combined with the estimate, will create the numeric values needed to prioritise the backlog of MVP tasks, using a technique called “Weighted Shortest Job First” (WSJF). The SCRUM team will then have created a prioritised backlog based on the highest value task with the smallest estimate. In addition to the tools and techniques mentioned above, the workshop will include a warm up task to familiarise themselves each other so the day can be more enjoyable. An overview of each of the tasks will also be included, as well as a summary of how some of aspects discussed in the workshop have been applied at AO.com. Emily runs these workshops throughout AO.com on a regular basis, helping continuous improvement inside and outside of the IT Department. Allowing the tasks to be created based on something everyone in the session can relate to, allows it to be ran to all levels of experience, meaning this is great for not just the BA's and PO's, but the wider business also. In addition, she is a fully certified SCRUM Master.
