Talk description
Title:
Authorised Anarchy, Challenging Cultural Norms
Short synopsis:
We would like to share our experience of implementing revised ways of working for a complex product development programme within a large engineering organisation, drawing upon Lean and Agile principles. We will describe how we challenged deeply rooted cultural and behavioural norms often inherent within a large matrix organisation and the resultant impacts that this had on the team and broader organisation as a result.

Long synopsis (optional):
We were given the opportunity to lead a project where we were able to experiment with ways of working due to a specific set of circumstances and the need to meet a set of complex and challenging product and programme requirements. In this talk, we would like to share our experience of having implemented these ways of working within a large matrix organisation, drawing upon Lean and Agile principles. We will share how we challenged deeply rooted cultural and behavioural norms and the resultant impacts that this had on the team and broader organisation as a result. We will describe how we wrestled with getting the balance right between demonstrating we had appropriate control to the Executive Leadership Team but also knowing we needed to foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation across the team if we were going to meet a particularly challenging set of Customers expectations. Formalising a revised set of rituals and tools in the context of a broader system was extremely helpful in changing the behavioural patterns that had long been associated with the way things are done, particularly in the early phases of the programme. We wanted to encourage experimentation to unleash the power of the team however it was also critical that the diverse team of 500 people were synchronised at key points in the design cycle due to the interdependencies between the multiple teams. The ritual of sprint planning and retrospectives became the scaffolding and structure to remain aligned, encouraging the process of reflection and learning and then importantly providing the insight to adapt and launch experiments where the teams saw opportunity to improve.
