A Self-Organizing Agile Team - Reality, Myth or Utopia?
Short synopsis:
Self-organization is the dream of every manager who implements agile methodologies. But does agile really help to build self-organizing teams? Long synopsis (optional):
My presentation explores the problem of self-organization in agile teams to indicate whether it’s a viable possibility for companies looking to optimize their operations. Drawing on my experience in managing tech teams and the research on the topic, I’ll suggest that self-organization is possible only when specific conditions are met. I'll give an overview of these conditions and explore the agency theory and the connections between team members, team members & clients (both internal and external), team members & employers, supervisors & employers. I’ll show where managers often fall into traps and how to avoid them. I’ll then move on to discuss management by values (MBV) as an alternative to management by objectives (MBO), and show why the organizational culture serves as one of the key factors that enable teams to become self-organizing.
