Title:
A Drama in the Office: A little bit of performing arts can go a long way to improve our performance!
Short synopsis:
The idea I’d like to share with you is all about lessons I’ve learned from the world of theatre that relate to our experiences in the workplace. We can learn from the personas that we come across in the theatre world: actors, directors, stage managers, etc, and apply them to the business world. There are underlying principles and practices across theatre that rely on empathy, creativity and meaning, that help drive performance in a non-theatre context.

Long synopsis (optional):
I’d love to share an idea with you called “A drama in the office” - which is all about how a little bit of performing arts can help our team’s performance. How is it that some people seem to be so in control of how they come across? And how do some people really seem to know how others will react to things? And why are some people just incredible at creating a safe and productive environment for people to flourish? I’ve done a lot of work in theatre, as an actor, director, writer - and I also work in the corporate world. And the idea I’d like to share with you is all about lessons I’ve learned from the world of theatre have a direct impact and relation on how people can succeed in their professional lives. Think of actors - they’re masters at empathising with people -after all, their job is to, quite literally, walk in someone else’s shoes! It’s not enough for them to just learn the lines and not fall over the furniture. I’ve got some ideas about how to build empathy in the workplace. Bad theatre Directors just tell people where to stand and how to deliver lines - and bad managers do similar. Great directors create a trusting, playful environment in the rehearsal room where people are allowed to try, fail, play and learn. How do they do that? Wouldn’t that be great to have in the workplace? Stage managers are incredible at creating environments to allow the magic to happen on stage. These people see all of the technical possibilities of turning a vision into a realty. These people in the workplace are great at understanding how we turn ideas into action. It takes everyone’s efforts in the theatre to create a great production - and the lessons we can learn and apply to the workplace can make sure we value everyone’s contribution to the success of our teams. That’s what I like to share with you.
