Talk description
Title:
Transforming teams through Feminist Leadership
Short synopsis:
Feminist Leadership is about capitalising on the ideas and skills of as many individuals as possible by establishing cooperation and group leadership instead of competition and personal leadership; it seeks to develop power "with others" instead of power "over others." Feminist leadership developed as a way of addressing deep social inequities, but it can also be used to transform the way team members work together. This talk will draw on ActionAid UK's award-winning experience of using feminist leadership to develop a better governance team.

Long synopsis (optional):
Agile development works best with self-organising teams who are adept at assessing and modifying their behaviour as individuals and as a team. Feminist leadership offers a way of assessing team behaviour that focuses on principles such as inclusion, collaboration, sharing power, and giving respectful feedback. Its aim is to capitalise on the ideas and skills of as many individuals as possible, using cooperation and group leadership instead of competition and personal leadership. It is not about "putting women first", but about developing a culture that is aware of power and whether power is being used to exclude and dominate, or to enable greater inclusion and participation. ActionAid UK is the first international organisation to implement feminist leadership as the underpinning of its leadership and culture. This innovation was recognized in 2018 when ActionAid UK won the BOND award for Good Governance and the Third Sector governance award for diversity. This talk will examine why and how ActionAid chose to implement Feminist Leadership; the Top Ten Principles of Feminist Leadership; and how Feminist Leadership resonates with Aglle principles.
