Talk description
Title:
Agile metrics for predicting the future
Short synopsis:
Most teams need to answer questions like “When will it be done? What can I get by date X?”. However, common estimation approaches often fail to give us the predictability we want, and tend to introduce bad behaviours like hard deadlines and hiding uncertainty. In this talk I’ll show you how, step by step and with real life examples, my team uses their historical data and metrics to forecast the future and answer these questions with confidence.

Long synopsis (optional):
The first time I gave this talk I used these slides: https://www.slideshare.net/mattiabattiston/agile-metrics-for-predicting-the-future For Agile on the Beach I would revise it and shorten it, based on the feedback that I’ve received since first presenting it. Learning outcomes from this talk include: - Typical problems with traditional estimation techniques, and why they happen - What data to collect and how - Answering “when will this story be done” using lead time - Answering “when will this feature/project be done” using forecasting techniques - How to run a forecast, step by step - How forecasts solve the typical problems with estimation - Answering a few other types of business questions using data metrics, e.g “What can I get done by date X? How much work should be put in the next sprint? What should we work on today?” The talk will include several real life examples from my own experience with my team. I will include some content from the book I’m co-authoring, “Team Guide to Metrics for Business Decisions” (https://leanpub.com/metricsforbusinessdecisions), for which I’ll be able to offer people discounts. The level of the talk will aim to help beginners. I don’t expect people to have any prior knowledge on the subject. The target audience that is usually interested in this topic includes scrum masters, product owners, agile coaches, team managers, project managers, team members. I can be flexible and adapt the talk to different lengths if need be.
