Long synopsis (optional):
Mobile is one of the most effective ways to engage customers, from a simple reminder, to more complex two-way engagements such as insight and feedback and even spanning mixed mode campaigns and customer journeys across many months. The humble text message is a hugely powerful medium. Over 90% of texts are read within 3 minutes, dwarfing other contact modes. Despite SMS's apparent simplicity implementing it effectively can be an extremely complex process. SMS, unlike Web based technologies, provides nothing for the developer to utilise to maintain state, has many subtle nuances, wide and varied and often little documented API's like SMPP, not to mention a raft of heavy telco regulation and regional variances to consider. In this session, The 3rd Degree's founders Phil Martin (CEO) and Ed Latimer-Sayer (CTO) will share their experiences and expertise gathered over the last 15 years. In that time we have had to negotiate all of this and much more to provide successful campaign implementations across the globe for blue-chip clients such as Vodafone, Nokia where we ran a global research campaign for My Nokia, Proctor and Gamble where we powered an extremely complex and effective SMS loyalty campaign for Pampers in the Philippines, Facebook, BBC, Citi Bank, Standard Chartered. Currently tens of millions of messages flow through our Synapta engagement platform every month. Having come from an enterprise and business critical background when we set out we did so with the intent of providing enterprise-class software to all clients. Trying to make this work in the fledgeling mobile world was hard and we had to find the right partners and processes to support our goals. The current mobile landscape whilst less challenging than it was is still a minefield. We'll tell you about: Aggregation - know your Tier 1's from your Tier 3's, and how to choose a reliable carrier partner Standards - GSM to CDMA Regional variances such as Transcodes and multilingual messaging. We'll also discuss some of the things you may not have thought about: Multi-part messaging Multi-stage Delivery Receipting Throughput considerations for large volumes - messages per second Throttling - Window sizing vs messages per second Interface standards - SMPP vs HTML vs Rest The session will be highly interactive and show working examples of sending a message in just minutes using a Rest API and some bash scripts to discussing 2-way messaging in Java J2EE. By the end of the session, you should have a good grasp of integrating the most power messaging medium to your project.
