Talk description
Title:
How to Interview in Real Life
Short synopsis:
Interviews are about selling yourself. They can feel disingenuous or misleading on either side. The candidate is saying what the interviewer wants to hear, but the candidate doesn’t get a good idea of the day-to-day. The interviewer’s touting the company line, but they can’t tell how much the candidate contributed to their projects. How can we change our approach to interviewing to get better information on both sides? Pair interviewing is one way in. In a paired, exploratory test session, the candidate can stop trying to market themselves and demonstrate how they learn and make decisions instead. They come away understanding what it would be like to work on the team. The interviewer can see how the candidate notices unexpected behavior and communicates risk. They come away with evidence of the candidate’s skills and interests. By the end of the session, everyone understands whether or not this role is a good fit. I'll give examples of tricky situations for interviewers, and how to find a way out of them, like when a candidate: - Doesn't know where to start, or how to continue - Has trouble articulating their thoughts - Speaks in the theoretical rather than the concrete - Misses obvious bugs - Can't demonstrate skills from their resume - Remains confident in the face of contradictory evidence - Clearly isn't a good fit It's important to create a supportive environment that takes the pressure off so the candidate has space to generate creative ideas. I'll give interviewers the vocabulary to encourage a candidate's curiousity and advocate for the candidates they want with their colleagues. Candidates will get inside an interviewer's head and learn how to nail any interview.
