Talk description
Title:
Agile at scale generative principles, an alternative to scaled frameworks
Short synopsis:
The Manifesto for Agile software development does not have an opinion about agile at scale involving multiple teams, multiple products and the whole organisation. Scaled agile frameworks fall short of achieving sustainable agility: some are a band-aid solution, others are deleterious. None of them can be a substitute for knowledge, understanding, and experience. Most companies that succeed in achieving agility at scale grew their ways of working internally, experimenting-learning-adapting-evolving inspired by lean and agile principles, the metaphor of organisations as living organisms, and the theory of socio-technical Complex Adaptive Systems (see, for example, Ralph Douglas Stacey). This session presents and suggests a list of generative principles that can inspire such an approach, and are an alternative to scaled frameworks, and asks attendees for comments and suggestions.

Long synopsis (optional):
The ideal length of the session is 90-120 minutes The format of the session is: - an initial frontal presentation - discussions in groups around the principles with Q&A and presentation of the reflection from the groups around the principles - final open conversation among all groups and closing notes An alternative version has a 45-60 minutes session with a frontal presentation of the principles and Q&A --------------------------------------------- If the session is accepted, the participation of Giovanni Asproni as co-speaker can be discussed, based on his availability --------------------------------------------- Giovanni Asproni and I have experience working in organisations using lean-agile to operate, large software development initiatives, and helping large organisations trying to adopt lean/agile ways of working. Based on our experience, our understanding of the lean and agile principles, complexity thinking, CAS theory, and related literature, we started to draft a list of principles around the practice of agile at scale. In an open-source fashion, we are gradually inviting others to review and evolve this list with the aim to open it to the whole community. Models on how to practice lean-agile at scale beyond frameworks have been shared before, but have been turned in a kind of framework themselves (e.g. the Spotify model). Other authors have presented ideas that goes beyond frameworks (e.g. the heart of agile from Alistar Cockburn and SWARM from Dan North) but they are seen as an initiative of a specific author. Giovanni and I would like to create a list of principles that are both beyond the frameworks and are owned by the whole community not by any author.
