Talk description
Title:
Liberating Structures
Short synopsis:
What would be made possible if you could unleash the intelligence and creativity of everyone? Liberating Structures are a collection of easy-to-learn facilitation patterns that make this possible. They're field tested, rooted in complexity science and freely shared under a creative commons licence. Through this workshop, participants will gain a practical hands-on experience of several Liberating Structures, and an appreciation of some of the possibilities they offer. We will consolidate learning by alternating between practice of a structure and reflection on the experience and possible applications in participants' own contexts.

Long synopsis (optional):
I would offer this session as a 90 minute highly interactive workshop. Learning will be through doing followed by reflection. This workshop was successfully delivered at Lean Agile Scotland in October 2018. Session outline: 1. Introduction [10 minutes] a) a bit about the speaker, how they got interested in LS, how they used it in their own work b) history, background and principles of Liberating Structures; their origins in complexity science; their attributes (expertless, results focused, rapid cycling, fun, inclusive, self-spreading, multi-scale, modular); brief overview of the repertoire; their generative potential as a system 2. Trying it out 2.1) Ecocycle planning [25 minutes] using the metaphor of an ecological cycle, participants will work first individually and then in pairs to review a portfolio of their choice (eg. how they spend their time, products or services offered by their company, engineering practices, agile ceremonies). Participants typically gain dramatic insights into how they can rebalance their investment of energies. We'll close the exercise with some reflections on insights and possible applications. 2.2) 25/10 crowdsourcing [20 minutes] using a challenge offered by a volunteer, the whole workshop will rapidly generate and then sift their most powerful actionable ideas to address the challenge. Participants will witness how a carefully crafted invitation, combined with this structure can generate dramatic, practical, actionable ideas whilst having a lot of fun! We'll close the exercise with some reflections on insights and possible applications. 2.3) Troika consulting [20 minutes] working in groups of three, participants give-and-get help from each other in rounds of rapid consultations. Each round one person plays the role of the client whilst the others act as consultants. By helping participants focus on deep active listening, the structure gives participants access to surprising and novel insights. When applied in an organisational context the structure helps build trust between team members and across organisational silos. 3) Closing reflections [10 minutes] the workshop will close with some reflections on the overall experience. What was made possible by these structures? What was novel or different? How might participants apply them in their own work?
