Talk description
Title:
Extreme Prototyping: Building Robust Demos Fast
Short synopsis:
When developing prototype software under time pressure, developers often take shortcuts with the aim of delivering as quickly as possible. We will share our experience of building a prototype for a prospective client, and how spending over half the available time on automation and good processes allowed us to go faster than if we had taken shortcuts. The key take away is that the time-frame threshold at which best practice approaches outperform the 'quick'-and-dirty ones is extremely low.

Long synopsis (optional):
When developing prototype software under time pressure, developers often take shortcuts with the aim of delivering as quickly as possible. In this session, we will describe how spending over half the available time on automation and good processes allowed us to navigate unfamiliar technology and to go faster than if we had taken shortcuts. We will share our experience of building an Alexa Skill prototype for a customer, and we will explain how investing in high quality, even for pieces of work lasting less than a fortnight, results in greater achievable scope, less stress, and, ultimately, a successful business outcome. The key take away from the talk is that the time-frame threshold at which best practice approaches outperform the more intuitive 'quick'-and-dirty ones is extremely low. Attendees will leave with confidence to produce the same high quality software for their shortest projects as they would for their longer ones.
