Long synopsis (optional):
Ilan and Laurence met at Agile on the Beach 2018 inside the popular Beerwolf (Why aren’t all pubs also bookshops?!) They quickly realised that despite living 3500 miles apart, not only did they enjoy very similar Agile Coaching roles but they shared fundamental beliefs about the social aspects that motivate people to do what they do. There and then they decided to collaborate and to combine and share what they learned from each other. In 1949, Eric Trist, founder at The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, emerged from the depths of the Elsecar Colliery a changed man. Despite technological advancements, coal mining was struggling to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for energy. Miners were complaining bitterly about their work despite efforts to improve both conditions and wages. But in Elsecar the mines were different. What Trist found there created a whole new social - and technical - approach to organizational structures. So what did he find and how does it relate to product development today? Ilan coaches in Israel in The Tavistcok philosophy and was able to tell Laurence all about the socio-technical facets of the most productive teams in Yorkshire Coal Mines. Laurence coaches in Yorkshire, not far from the Elsecar Colliery that productivity expert Trist had studied. He told Ilan about how he sings in the Leeds Male Voice Choir which was formed deep in those Yorkshire mines 100 years ago. Together they bring Trist’s story to life and suggest how it relates to the productivity of Agile teams today using images, video and even live music!
