Talk description
Title:
We all want to eliminate waste, but are we doing it all wrong?
Short synopsis:
In 1959 Izabel Menzies published her seminal paper on Social Systems as a Defense Against Anxiety, based on her research of nurses in hospitals. The findings were ground breaking: nurses unconsciously all but neglected patients! In this talk we'll explore real life stories that show how types of waste in a typical software project are irrational forms of behavior that unconsciously impair our desired quality and value. With this in mind we'll show how types of waste are the result of irrational thinking, and not the root cause of failing projects. Finally, we'll walk through options to fight off behaviors that result in waste.

Long synopsis (optional):
- Short analysis of Menzies' research - Short introduction to the 7 types of waste - Introduction of a hypothesis that software professionals unconsciously contribute to producing waste - Examples for types of waste with real life examples as supporting evidence - Examples for leadership and teamwork practices that contribute (directly and indirectly) to reducing waste - Potentially I will add a mini-workshop with participants to make their own waste disposal facility to take home with them from the conference. I will know about the last point once I run dry and wet runs of the talk.
