Talk description
Title:
Keeping the Retrospective Alive
Short synopsis:
One of the principles of the Agile Manifesto states “At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.” Retrospectives are a powerful tool for teams to inspect and adapt, however they can become repetitive and tedious. I will be discussing tried and tested ideas to make retrospectives engaging, fun and effective.

Long synopsis (optional):
The session would cover - • Why do we do retrospectives? • What makes a good retrospective? • Where do retrospectives go wrong? • How to make retrospectives engaging, fun and effective - o Ice breakers and mini games ♣ This section includes how to warm up the room to encourage everyone to speak up, including short agile games. o Themed ♣ Is there a particular issue to address? Examples would include returning to core agile principles, focusing on a topic e.g. team happiness, code quality, dev ops culture etc. Do we need to get to know people in our team, examples include the smarties game. o Emotive ♣ Retros themed around emotion are particularly useful if there are sensitive topics to discuss. This would include examples such as the Captain Jack Sparrow retro, mad/glad/sad etc. o Story telling ♣ Sometimes telling stories individually or as a team can piece together a picture better than a few words. Examples would include Pass the Paper, Draw and Annotate etc o Venue ♣ Should we do this away from the office? Outside? With a beer in our hand? Whilst getting fresh air? • How and when do we know what type of retro to do? • How do we measure success?
