Title:
Ski to tea – building trust faster with confidence maps
Short synopsis:
As Software Engineers, we love metrics. We often count lines of code, branches, test cases and defects instinctively. Is having the metrics a good indicator of quality? and how should we best evaluate these to gain confidence in our deliverables? In this session we will examine quality confidence in the world of software development and explore how a more holistic approach - combining several approaches - might lead to greater insight. What’s the best way to digest all the data? Can more visual approaches help us make a more informed - albeit subjective - evaluation of the many different objective reference points?

Long synopsis (optional):
How do you build shared understanding in large software teams and measure the right things on the way to done? As software engineers, we love metrics. We often count lines of code, branches, test cases and defects instinctively. Is having the metrics really a good indicator of quality? How should we best evaluate these to gain confidence in our deliverables? In this session Richard will walk through how his team went from taking two weeks to find out if their code was broken (a length of a ski holiday) to figuring this out during a tea break. Ski to tea to know whether the code works! It wasn’t easy and it took time for the transformation to happen and for the squads to unpack three key metrics that really meant something: time to get the build through, time to get the results back and time to know whether you’ve broken a major component. This and the resulting culture change meant that instead of management pushing work to squads, the squads are protected and enabled by managers. Because trust. Squads report easy to understand metrics that are backed up by subject matter experts. What would a confidence map for your team look like?
