Talk description
Title:
Humanity’s ultimate exercise in goal setting, the Lunar Landing
Short synopsis:
Can be provided as 30 or 45 minute presentations, keynote, or workshop In the early sixties, firstly to Congress, later to an audience of 40,000 at Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas and, therefore, to the world via the medium of television, John F Kennedy delivered a speech outlining the most ambitious goal in the history of mankind. His vision was clear, it was concise, it outlined objectives, outcomes and timelines. The vision put mankind on the path to other planets and, hopefully, the stars themselves. In simple terms, he implored the US (and the world) to “commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth” He knew the difficulty, expense, and the danger; it was also opposed by 58% of the US [Gallup], however before the decade was out, Man was on the moon. Fascinated by space, as Elaine was from an early age, she recalls watching the Lunar Landing. Little did she know, however, the challenges the Apollo missions faced, the methods of incremental delivery, the team building and comradery of the crews in space and on the ground, and the continuous improvement as they worked inexorably to the ultimate goal would feature heavily in her own vision for good Agile practice. By taking the audience through the challenges, breakthroughs and best practices of the missions, Elaine brings real agility to life. As a workshop : Whilst exploring the backdrop of the Apollo programme of 50 years ago, and reviewing the working practices of NASA and those companies associated with it, the latest understanding of the psychology of goal setting will be applied as, put simply, SMART goals alone do not work. By understanding how a simply worded vision galvanised a team of individuals to greatness, the attendees of this workshop will be invited to review their own and their company’s visions for the future and whether they are ‘fit for purpose’. Through instruction, trainer led facilitation, and practical exercises the tutorial will enable the attendees will develop a greater understanding about the psychology of visionary goal setting and how to make it work for them. Objective : To provide understanding of how, whether in one’s personal life or in business, persistence, determination and single-minded focus to the ultimate aim, can bring ANY project home, and how failure, even in extremis, needn’t be feared. And in understanding this, how individuals and businesses can reach their true potential.

And in understanding this, how individuals and businesses can reach their true potential. Takeaways : As a result of the presentation/workshop the attendees : a) will understand how a simply worded vision inspires and excites and put visionary goal setting into practice in their own lives b) will realise that the best visions are flexible to change without corruption of the outcome, the product or of the vision itself c) know the psychology as to why the SMART goals we’re told about DON’T work, and what to do about it d) will understand why, in business, team stability, is critical to the success of driving home the vision e) will learn to be more comfortable around failure, embracing rather than fearing it, using it as feedback mechanism to enhance themselves, the process and quality of the vision f) be empowered to move from simple goal setting to visionary direction in both their personal and business lives.
