Talk description
Title:
Avoiding Rescuing and looking after yourself
Short synopsis:
We coach teams and individuals on their journey’s forwards but to me it always feels like there is a very fine line between coaching with positive intent and stepping over and helping. What is happening when we cross the line to rescuing and what drives us to do this? Is there a relationship between coaching, servant leadership, rescuing and self-care? This session explores psychological models and patterns of behaviour that drive what how we act and perhaps even why we come to coach. It is well understood that people who are paid for helping others or are devoted to other human beings can often with time come to experience there “helping” activities in more of a negative light. Explore how our scripts play into what we do, how can we find balance through self-care, measuring ourselves and what we can do to avoid the rescue trap.

Long synopsis (optional):
We coach teams and individuals on their journey’s forwards but to me it always feels like there is a very fine line between coaching with positive intent and stepping over and helping. What is happening when we cross the line to rescuing and what drives us to do this? What’s happening within? Is there a relationship between coaching, servant leadership, rescuing and self-care? This session explores some psychological models and patterns of behaviour that drive what how we act and perhaps even why we have come to coach. Some of the models and games we will explore include: • Transactional Analysis and Ego States • The Ok Matrix • The Karpman Drama Triangle • The Rescue Game It is well understood that people who are paid for helping others or are devoted to other human beings can often with time come to experience there “helping” activities in more of a negative light. Decades of thinking and research that has taken place to understand how people are affected by each other and how their past experiences affect them. There is an understanding of the effects of therapy on therapists and I wonder if coaches, scrum masters and leaders experience similar effects in their work. Over the past few years I got more interested in exploring further, I have been surprised to learn of the depth of explanation and understanding by stepping outside of scrum and agile and dipping into Psychology and older literature. Explore how our scripts play into what we do, how can we find balance through self-care, measuring ourselves and what we can do to avoid the rescue trap.
