As a consultant, I struggled for years to improve the engagement of people in software companies until I finally realised we needed to rethink the way we manage our teams by adopting self-management practices. In this talk, I will discuss my journey to discover self-management. I’ll discuss the benefits of developing a culture of self-management along with the methods, tools, and processes you could use to encourage its emergence.

A significant portion of your workforce is disengaged. Around the world, a staggering 87% of employees are disengaged from their work and this is costing companies billions in lost productivity alone. As a leader and a consultant, I struggled for years to improve the engagement of people in software companies and ensure this engagement continued long after I left. I eventually realised we needed to rethink the way we manage our businesses and our teams by adopting self-management practices. I want to share my learnings with you, the Business of Software audience, as you have the power to change your companies and improve the engagement and happiness of thousands of people in our industry. I aim for you to leave knowing the benefits of developing a culture of self-management and the danger of not adopting this approach in our changing business world.
