Talk description
Title:
Long term strategy realisation using Agile
Short synopsis:
The major issue I have witnessed with companies and teams trying to go Agile is they are too focused on the short term result and have little sight on the future landscape. Agile is excellent for short term high value delivery and innovation to achieve a bigger goal, but if it is not matched with a strong long term vision it can and often does run askew. The legendary Japanese swordsman and philosopher, Miyamoto Musashi, puts it well: Perception is strong and sight is weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distant view of close things. Examples include SpaceX shuttle creation and Nasa's asteroid landing; industries often run in traditional styles with exploding budgets and timelines.

Long synopsis (optional):
The basis of the talk would cover the history of where Agile cam from (lean, TQM, TPM, Demming) and how and why it fit into software development so well. Examples of where it has worked in non traditional areas and cultures and why. Then a breakdown of how Agile can be used to deliver on long term strategy using SMART stretch goals, communication, vision and most importantly understanding that Agile is a methodology and not a framework and what that means.
