Talk description
Title:
Being the BEST
Short synopsis:
Want your team to be the best they can be? Want to get them engaged in achieving this goal? Want to get your stakeholders bought into this journey and back you? If so then the BEST view framework is for you. Based on a single piece of paper, the team defines what they do, why they do it and how to measure their attainment of those goals. Shunning death by PowerPoint and pointless Gantt chart project plans, but instead using Agile practices with Lean influences to deliver definitive improvement.

Long synopsis (optional):
The BEST view is a framework which has been developed, refined and used in anger over the last few years in a number of IT teams with fantastic results and amazing feedback. The framework is designed to engage everyone in the team, with the team being an integral part of defining the overall goals and becoming one in the endeavour to achieve those goals. Many team driven initiatives fail eventually because senior management and leadership are not bought into work the team are doing and often that’s because they don’t understand or share the teams goals. The BEST view addresses this vital aspect of improvement by getting all stakeholders bought into the improvement goals by drawing on their own goals and feeding those into the team’s Vision and Mission statements. The BEST view also clearly explains the team’s areas of work, also known as value streams. The team measures and reports on progress on a quarterly basis, demonstrating return on investment and allowing decisions to be made on future investment focus. This is all done on a single piece of paper, it’s a big piece of A0, but crucially that single piece of paper is on the wall and visible all the time. Discussions around improvement are not sat down in meeting rooms, but instead in the office area stood around a focal point. The BEST view promotes the use of colour and images to help with clarity and engagement. Each area of work has a champion from the team, with the goal to have as many different champions as possible. Champions will validate their area’s content, goals and metrics, and collects metrics at the end of each iteration. Key areas are chosen by the team and its stakeholders to focus improvement on each quarter, with the standard agile ceremonies in place to get improvements done. Like Agile, the BEST view is not a quick fix but instead a realistic and sustainable framework for improvement. It should be a very quick framework to put in place, but you’re likely to discover that your team have very different views on what they do and are responsible for, what is important and what metrics make sense. Don’t despair because knowing this makes the framework worthwhile and within a few workshops you’ll be acting in harmony and you’ll collectively be ready for the challenges ahead. The BEST view will get your team and your stakeholders engaged in your journey to excellence, but it will also highlight when you falter! The framework is honest and transparent, and when embraced will become part of your team’s fabric and way of being. This talk will explain the principles and components of the BEST view. A plan for implementing and running the framework will be also detailed, so at the end of the session you’ll know how to go about implementing the BEST view with your own teams. A BEST view template and supplementary instructions will be linked to within the presentation.
