Title:
Project "You" and Project "Two"
Short synopsis:
All too often we focus on the work and not the worker. Approaches like value stream mapping and impediment removal take a work-centric view of efficiencies and improvements. They attempt to oil-the-machine, but what if we could upgrade the motor? When we shift our focus to our own well-being and then the well-being of our team members, far greater improvements can be found. This is “Project You,” the improvement and investment in yourself. “Project You” should come first, but often it is relegated to second or third choice (or forgotten completely) as work and home pressures take over. This workshop explains why Project You should be your first priority, and how your work project is really Project Two. It provides a full spectrum view of well being that includes skills, health, happiness, and relationships. It also provides a framework for investment, measurement and growth to improve our resilience and capacity. Agile approaches are useful when they help us be more successful at work, but pale compared approaches that can help us be more successful in life. So, take some time to invest in project You.

Long synopsis (optional):
Focusing on project You may seem selfish, but it is not when you consider what is powering your project contributions—your capabilities. Investing in yourself will help your employer and project; it will increase your competencies and capacity to do more work. Skills are just one aspect of you. Your health, happiness and relationships with others are also critical parts of your makeup that will hurt performance if they are not attended to and in good condition. People cannot go on if they are unhappy, unsupported or sick. Just like learning new skills, we need to invest in our well-being and the well-being of those close to us to remain productive. Of course, the idea of project You applies to all the team members on our project also. It is common to view teams as the interaction and sum contributions of the team member efforts. Then, as good servant leaders, we attempt to remove roadblocks and communicate a clear vision of where we are trying to get to. However, a better view of projects is to also see the people driving these contributions. When we consider our team members as more than just their skills and effort, and also take an interest in their health, happiness and relationships, we discover more places we can help. By definition, projects are temporary endeavours. People, however, should take a longer-term view of their success. Our achievement on our current project (and the projects to come) will in large part be driven by our full-spectrum well-being. The same goes for the colleagues we work with. So why not examine project You and invest in your future?
