Talk description
Title:
Agile team motivation with neuroscience
Short synopsis:
We expect a lot from our teams: high performance, engagement, attention to customer needs... to be that great teams should have high and stable motivation. Is it money or something else? Can we improve it? What should be done to help people find their motivation at work? These are the questions we would like to discuss here. People are so different and they can be motivated and demotivated by so many things. We will even need to review the cultural differences to understand the motivational dominanta for countries. Hopefully we can use neuroscience to identify 3 main components that establish motivation for Agile teams and one hidden ingredient without that the whole thing will just not work.

Long synopsis (optional):
Agile team motivation with neuroscience We expect a lot from our teams: high performance, engagement, attention to customer needs... to be that great teams should have high and stable motivation. Is it money or something else? Can we improve it? What should be done to help people find their motivation at work? People are so different and they can be motivated and demotivated by so many things. We will even need to review the cultural differences to understand the motivational dominanta for ethnoses. Hopefully we can use Neuroleadership approach to identify 3 main components that establish motivation in our head and one hidden ingredient without that the whole thing will just not work. Learning Outcomes: - Understand how motivation is established in the brain (dopamine pathways) - Learn how task is perceived to be worth doing, with timings for how long it should be and the motivation window of 4 minutes - Learn why boredom is killing motivation and what we can do with that - Learn that our brain is a perfect prediction machine and how we use that for team motivation and how it can easily demotivate if it is used incorrectly - Understand that team motivation is a mindset that should match with the whole company - Practice the money motivation case - can we guess what really works? - Learn and practice cultural differences and how motivation dominanta affects team leadership - Summarise 3 main components of Agile team motivation - intention, emotional tone and cultural leadership fit - Understand the hidden ingredient without that the whole motivation system will not work - this is the freedom of choice and this is the core of Agile motivation mindset Mechanics and Details
 - Introduction, about Anna's experience and Neuroleadership approach that she uses - What motivation is and where it is in the brain (dopamine pathway) with examples - How we perceive the task and what happens when motivation is low and task seems difficult - Important timings for motivation - 25 minutes anticipation lasts and 2-4 minutes motivation is established - What happens when we have boring task - it is the same as high stress and motivation is blocked - Reiss motivational profile - people are very different - Our brain as a perfect prediction machine (with some unexpected effects) - how we use it for team motivation? - Reward size or equality - what is more important - Motivation is a mindset match between people and the company - Interactive discussion - a case with money and not money motivation - Cultural differences - how they affect motivation and leadership for teams - Putting all together - 3 main ingredients - intention (anticipation), emotional tone (psychological environment), cultural dominanta (leadership fit) - Hidden ingredient without that motivation will not be formed in the brain - the freedom of choice. - So the whole thing is - motivation can be only internal, based on prediction in the brain, money is just the universal motivator, not the best one and we have 3 components and 1 hidden ingreadient to make it all work Note about this talk This talk was created in March 2018 and initially presented at AgileDays conference in Moscow (1500+ participants). It received huge interest and was rated 3rd with 4.92 points from 5 by more than 200 reviews. It is my best rated talk so far (it was rated even higher than Coaching Tired teams and Powerful Powerless Leader). After that it was presented at several conferences (in Russia and Europe) and is now included as a module in Agile team Performance training. Unfortunately I have video in russian only, but you can see that people are laughing and even applausing in the middle of the talk and overall the atmosphere is fantastic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCgxIMhsy60 Presentation (in english) can be found here: https://www.slideshare.net/AnnaObukhova/agile-team-motivation-submission-aotb-2019
