Talk description
Title:
Does your team know they are helping put a man on the moon?
Short synopsis:
President Kennedy visiting the Space Centre bumped into a man brushing the floor. He asked the man “what do you do?” the man replied, “I’m helping put a man on the moon.” Without a clear understanding and shared purpose, a project team can’t perform at its best, will not deliver the most creative and appropriate results and will not feel a part of something important. This session will help Project Managers and Scrum Masters develop and maintain buy-in from the rest of their team. It will demonstrate how to motivate and get the best from the individuals in your team and how to foster brilliant team solutions.

Long synopsis (optional):
If NASA had asked a supplier to provide them with a selection of dehydrated foods they could easily have met the brief with a tub of powdered food which was nutritious, tasty and cheap. However this would not have been a good solution, as when the tub was opened this dehydrated food would have escaped, drifted around a space capsule and caused a catastrophic fire. The way to avoid disasters like this is not just to be specific about the goal of the project, but the purpose of the project which helps enable real buy-in from the project team. How Project Managers and Scrum Masters communicate with their team can really make the difference between success and failure. It’s not what you say that makes the difference, it’s how you say it. In this session, you will learn the importance of defining and sharing the Purpose, as well as the outcome. You will learn how to facilitate this initial buy-in, and how to maintain the motivation and commitment of your team. You will gain an understanding that team working is simple, it just isn’t easy. You will learn how to develop a team culture that is effective, utilises everyone’s strengths and helps them find creative and simple solutions to problems. You will learn the difference between Project Management and Project Leadership and how this approach to personnel will enhance your performance and increase your project success rate.
