Title:
It’s Agile Jim, but not as we know it!
Short synopsis:
Whether you’re building a Klingon Bird-of-Prey or Robot Vacuum cleaner, agile software delivery for physical products is hard. When you are bringing together the development of an embedded software platform, robotics and machine learning algorithms, mobile apps and backend cloud services, all for a pre-defined launch date, can you really do it without a Gantt chart in sight? Well, we have certainly been giving it our best shot! This is the story of our journey so far in transforming how Dyson is developing products with an ever-increasing reliance on software.

Long synopsis (optional):
Dyson is known for its unconventional and innovative approach to engineering and design challenges. When it came to rapidly growing agile teams to deliver on our ambitions for a range of connected products and IoT Platform, we have not shied away from doing things our own way. Growing teams quickly whilst keeping and nurturing the right innovative culture has been hard, there are things which we have found have really helped and others which have spectacularly not. I will talk about how we have been trying to answer some of these questions to help us grow: - How do we interact with the rest of the business who are familiar with waterfall development? - How can we be lean when we have to commit to tooling 6-9 months before the product launches? - How do we incrementally deliver between 5 very different software disciplines at the same time? - Should we arrange teams around disciplines, functions or products? - How do we build collaboration between teams separated by thousands of miles and time zones? - How do we get everyone pulling in the same direction? - How do we tailor processes to teams with very different release cadences? - How do we not make that mistake again! Two years in, and we have also started to look at picking some elements of SAFe to see if it will help or hinder us with some scaling challenges. This is something we have done with some trepidation as a lot of thought leaders and members of our teams we admire, have said avoid it like the plague. I will talk about the bits we have found helpful and surprising, the ones we have definitely not and why we ever looked at some of it in the first place!
