Title:
Failure can be Fruitful and Fun makes it Fulfilling
Short synopsis:
To win in today's knowledge work arena we need to innovate faster than our competitors. This means testing new ideas and technologies quicker than our peers. To maximize learning 50% of our experiments should fail since we are looking for new insights, not confirmation of what we already know. Yet people don’t like failure. It is demotivating and we have been conditioned to avoid it. Learn how to overcome this bias and push past the stigma of failure by promoting fun in the team space.

Long synopsis (optional):
The old project management adage “Failing to plan is planning to fail” has its roots in predictive, industrial era projects. These days knowledge based organizations gain competitive advantage by learning faster than their peers. To do this they use short iterations to vet designs and test ideas. By design 50% of our experiments should fail since we are looking for new insights, not confirmation of what we already know. Running experiments we expect to succeed is a lost opportunity in the race for innovation and a waste of time we can never get back. Yet there is still a huge stigma attached to failure. People like to report progress not “learnings”, measurement systems favour successes, and failure is a big demotivator. The solution to this dilemma is fun, serious fun. We need to better understand and communicate the workings of intrinsic motivation, flow, and achievement. In this session we investigate good experiment design, motivation, and how to frame failure as information-rich learning. We review creating psychologically safe work environments and how people have the “ Success-leads-to-Happiness” equation backwards. We will explore the effects of dopamine on intellectual performance and investigate 5 tools for increasing happiness and persevering beyond failure. Fun is no laughing matter, well actually it is, but it’s serious business too.
