Mayden’s Scrum Transformation
Short synopsis:
The session will provide an honest case study of Mayden's agile transformation and how the software development team has embraced an 'inspect and adapt' attitude and an evolutionary approach to scrum adoption. The case study will share the collective effort of multiple scrum teams and four years of practical scrum experience. The session will be split into three sections: - Life before scrum - Adoption of scrum and transformation - Life today and the wider business

Long synopsis (optional):
Life before scrum The scene will be set by sharing how Mayden’s software development team operated before scrum, detailing how work was allocated to individual developers by managers and how developers largely planned, architected, problem solved and coded as individuals. The problems and inefficiencies this created, eg developer specialist silos, low developer morale and troubled capacity planning, will be explored. Adoption of scrum and transformation We will describe how scrum was chosen as the way forward. The process of implementing scrum in the development team will be explored along with the various problems and issues that had to be overcome during the early stages of the transformation. There will be focus on the immediate improvements and successes that moving to scrum brought to the business, how the development team became more productive and how the developers themselves benefited and grew in confidence and stature. Life today and the wider business Agile transformation at Mayden is ongoing and over the last couple of years, one of the key challenges has been scaling scrum. Mayden's evolutionary approach has been to try different solutions to problems and if they don’t work, learn from the experience and try an alternative approach. During the last two years, we have also shared our experiences and tried to extend our agile working practices to the non-development teams within the business, with mixed results. We will share our learning from: - building a collaborative and trusting environment - dividing a growing development community into scrum teams - handling cross team communications and estimations - product owner capacity and availability as the number of scrum teams increases - ensuring the role of scrum master and product owner are clearly understood - scaling sprint planning and reviews - handling reactive support tasks - making decisions and prioritising work across multiple scrum teams - implementing scrum and agile practices in other areas of the business Although Mayden has made a genuine success of adopting Scrum, Rob and Claire will identify that they don’t yet have answers to all the challenges they face and will invite the audience to share their views.
