Talk description
Title:
Pragmatic agile at scale with safety-critical products
Short synopsis:
Are agile methods appropriate for safety-critical products? I will describe how my team and our partners, working in the nuclear industry, have managed to be agile while maintaining nuclear safety. A related issue is the complex nature of the work, spread over multiple teams in multiple companies, with work projected to continue for over 5 years. I will describe how an agile approach has helped to manage this work. I will discuss the processes and artefacts we use and our attitude to these.

Long synopsis (optional):
Agile methods, which prize quick feedback from deployed product, can appear irresponsible when the product is safety critical. I will describe how my team and our partners, working in the nuclear industry, have managed to be agile while maintaining nuclear safety. Our approach values multiple types of feedback and arguably goes further than both staging and dual-track development. A related issue is the complex nature of the work, spread over multiple teams in multiple companies, with work projected to continue for over 5 years. I will describe how an agile approach has helped to manage this work, including our approach to estimates and to decoupling products. I will discuss the processes and artefacts we use and our attitude to these. For example, our sprint plans don’t contain estimates (at least not in pounds or points) but we do estimate at the level of the epic, which fits with both the nature of the work and some agile estimating theories.
