Absence – much ado about nothing

Long synopsis (optional):
A tester really never finds nothing at all. Most people understand that negative results of test or experiments are important. Looking to see if a test produces a certain result and not getting it is clearly informative. There are however always infinitely many things not happening and not showing up, so why are we not thus flooded with information? The difference between nothing and absence is expectation - that absence depends on a model or theory, even if it isn't stated in advance. Given your current theories, and the context if you will, you have expectations which sometimes make you go "That's odd..." when there is "nothing" to observe. So when alarm sensors are silent, functions return "no errors", bugs have magically disappeared, or a test you thought was well designed comes back inconclusive, is there really nothing to worry about and nothing you've learned? In this presentation I hope to change how you value results, and enrich the way you develop your understanding. I promise, there is nothing to fear.
