Talk description
Title:
Imagining work: using physical space to visualise, plan and track work
Short synopsis:
In our work with clients we typically use a lot of post-its and ‘decorate’ many walls to visualise and track our work. In this workshop I will introduce a number of different visualisation approaches that I have used and that any participant could choose to reuse for themselves. We will use these techniques to jointly create a visual wall to plan and track your conference experience. Come along, learn, and have some fun!

Long synopsis (optional):
Using visual walls to represent work is a very ‘lo-fi’ approach to planning that enables everyone involved to feel part of the process as they create and move tangible objects, such as post-its or index cards, rather than just manipulating or viewing items in a tool. It allows people to be creative as different techniques can be used for different teams and different circumstances. For distributed teams, cameras can be used to share information or the walls can be replicated in tools allowing the information to be fully transparent to everyone - no need to grant tool access rights / have licences. They can also be a great conversation-starter. This interactive workshop introduces and explains the value of visualising work while engaging everyone in the room, and leaving a strong set of messages in the participants’ minds. Dee uses these techniques all the time, is very experienced in their use, and regularly helps others in ThoughtWorks or at a client learn how to use them for themselves. The idea is that attendees of this workshop will not only experience creating visualisation techniques for themselves, but also have the opportunity to learn how to create them for their own purposes.
