Title:
Be flexible, but also be secure - designing a Continuous Delivery platform for the enterprise
Short synopsis:
How to transition a large enterprise company to practice Continuous Delivery and deploy applications to Kubernetes? When faced with this task, our first goal was to make sure it’s flexible enough the support both the early adopters and future innovators. Rigid, one-size-fits-all solutions can easily become bottlenecks of innovation and targets of scorn for developers, who feel unnecessarily constrained by them. But a large enterprise is subject to both regulations and internal security rules. These place hard requirements on deployment processes, which don’t exactly help with designing a flexible system. This is the story of building an enterprise-wide Continuous Delivery solution and the subsequent process of adoption. We used Jenkins as the core building block and GitOps as the architecture pattern, which helped untangle the knot of flexibility with security. Finally, Kubernetes was our application platform, which is the best we could wish for.
