Talk description
Title:
Internal user stories
Short synopsis:
Key moments - the ones where how we respond can make or break an idea, a project, a company - these moments are so often undermined by the stories we tell ourselves. Pressure leads us to fall back on subconscious assumptions and insecurities, and these assumptions affect our reaction to both the situation and to the people we’re talking to; they can be equally misinterpreted by whoever we're speaking to, potentially amplifying the problem. Using neuroscience and psychological approaches including transactional analysis, we will look at the ways our monkey brains derail us with automatic thoughts and responses. We will then walk through some simple but effective steps we can use as individuals, as coaches, and with our teams, to keep our responses in check and our plans and intentions on track.

Long synopsis (optional):
The introductory portion of this session will look at the ways we react to situations and cues, our emotional responses to stressful situations where we feel we are being attacked or manipulated. We will spend a short amount of time looking at the consequences of our reactions and the neurological brain function that causes this. The rest of the session will be dedicated to going through ways to identify pivotal situations as they arise, and taking participants through ways we can keep our responses in check, so we can take a mental step back before a situation goes awry. This section of the session is where we will look at e.g. Transactional Analysis and other relevant psychological approaches. People will come away from this talk with a series of tools they can use to develop themselves and their own reactions, but which they can also take back to their teams to be picked up e.g. in retrospective, in 1-1 coaching sessions, team workshops, and so on.
