Long synopsis (optional):
Breakfast is the meal where you prepare yourself for the day – for doing something great. In the always faster changing VUCA-world which isa dresses by the agile methodologies continuous improvement is an important goal for the individual, the team, the system and the organization. But what if the organizational culture is the way that improvement will be eaten before you can prepare for it? This culture talk will tell the story of an ambitious project in difficulties and the half-hearted attempts to improve or even rescue it. It shows that lots of experts are not a guarantee to succeed or improve. It also shows how political inhouse games are the reason for losing the scope of the work. The story will point out the difference between personal goals, departmental goals and organizational goals as well as the danger of the lack of transparency. It tells the story how silos and a strong hierarchy are used to forward blame and responsibility to others. This story explains the costs of ineffective meetings and how power can be used to demotivate engaged people who would love to strive for improvement. It is about open communication vs. beating around the bush, self-declared heroics, the putting-everyone-on-CC-mentality and other bad habits and their (negative) impact on the improvement process. This talk will explain why it is so important to have a 100% buy-in on a culture of improvement across all levels of hierarchy. It will also show the importance of why we are here for doing the work and that value is only achieved when it is delivered to the customer. At the end of the talk we have collected several bad habits which we should stop as soon as we have identified them. But we also have a collection of good habits and methods which will embrace and foster improvement.
