Talk description
Title:
Operating at 80% Awesome
Short synopsis:
The Lego Movie got us with their earworm tune Everything is Awesome. But the Lego Movie 2 reflected on this, and helps us realise that being awesome 100% of the time is just not sustainable. Everything is not always awesome. This is a presentation by Rachel Picken and Claire Eason-Bassett - business leaders, mothers, daughters, partners. The concept of Operating at 80% Awesome was debuted at Scrum Global Gathering in Vienna, October 2019. Since then, Claire and Rachel have built a community of more than 300 fans of Operating at 80% Awesome - many of whom are blissfully unaware they are bringing some Agile magic to their lives.

Long synopsis (optional):
The Lego Movie got us with their earworm tune Everything is Awesome. But the Lego Movie 2 reflected on this, and helps us realise that being awesome 100% of the time is just not sustainable. Everything is not always awesome. Rachel and Claire are business leaders, mothers, daughters, partners. They began their Agile journey in 2012 – Rachel applying it to public relations, Claire applying it to event management. Claire led the event delivery team behind Agile on the Beach, voted the third most popular Agile conference globally and after a 2018 filled with complex change, is now leading the Enterprises team at English National Ballet. Rachel now delivers Agile Project Management for PR training with her professional body, the CIPR. She’s also part of the writing team behind Agile Vox, the Scrum Alliance’s magazine and website – travelling the UK to report on amazing application of Agile and Scrum at a diverse range of organisations. As friends and colleagues, they quickly realised that Agile and Scrum apply perfectly to real life – parenting, dating, marriage, grief, friendships, organising the home and more. With both experiencing massive change in their personal and professional lives, it was clear that life is far too short to waste. Whilst on a Retrospective Frazzled Boss Ladies break last summer, they developed the concept of Operating at 80% Awesome. And so, they created the Lean Life Canvas - resource that allows you to take a Life Retrospective, identify your Life MVP and be clear about what delivers value for you every day. Based roughly on Pareto, this is about recognising that it’s impossible to deliver 100% awesome at all times, even if resources are limitless. Where Agile celebrates delivering value and excellence, what simplicity can you bring to life to ensure you protect your energy and performance? How can we create and use resources to support and enable our 80% Awesome? Claire and Rachel will bring some of their thinking to life with real life examples, from staying sane during holiday season to nailing career and life goals, and from keeping on top of the mental chaos to creating your own high performance family team.
