Talk description
Title:
"They" are people too
Short synopsis:
Collaboration isn’t something that ‘us’ and ‘them’ can do. We all need to work together. In addition to the fascinating neuroscience of collaboration, the talk is based on personal experience both at work and sitting on the edge of a sandbox. This talk introduces practices any one of us can apply here and now and take them with us wherever we may roam.

Long synopsis (optional):
Business decided to do it like this. The developers are not delivering fast enough. Management doesn’t understand what we do. The customer asked for this. Testing is taking too long. The architects decided that. HR wouldn’t allow us to do that. The consultants designed it like this. The Shareholders don’t want that. These kind of statements are uttered in most companies and with a higher frequency in large corporations. Many people consider this kind of language normal and it actually is perfectly natural — when you’re talking about your enemies. Collaboration isn’t something that ‘us’ and ‘them’ can do. We need to work together. Luckily, these borders are figments of our collective imagination which means we can simply get rid of them. Unfortunately, simple doesn’t always mean easy, especially if there’s a long history of digging trenches. In addition to the fascinating neuroscience of collaboration, the talk is based on personal experience both at work and sitting on the edge of a sandbox. This talk introduces practices any one of us can apply here and now and take them with us wherever we may roam.
