Talk description
Title:
Healthy Discovery
Short synopsis:
Starting a discovery can actually be quite scary for many teams (and their stakeholders!), because it's a launch into the unknown. It can be hard to sense and set appropriate focus and constraints for the work without inadvertently steering towards a particular solution. To properly follow a trail of insight and evidence you need to be open to go where it may lead, which feels like not having a plan. But there are ways to balance these competing needs and fears. I've led discovery teams working in government departments and in the commercial sector. In this session I'll share what I've learned (often the hard way) about making discoveries healthy. Includes... - what defines a healthy discovery? - how to give structure to discovery without constraining the team - a starting place for core discovery 'modules' and checklists - how to explain discovery to stakeholders, building trust to earn the team freedom - ways in which constraints on a discovery are healthy and how to set them - how to create an atmosphere of exploration while staying focused - how to show and share your work, in ways that work for your audiences - some tips on tools that can help you run healthy discoveries (none that I have a connection to!) - how to use all your senses to keep your discovery on track - what journalism taught me about running discoveries on digital products
