Talk description
Title:
Agile for All (from Push to Pull with Agile in Business)
Short synopsis:
I strongly believe that 'Agile is for Everyone'. Based on more than 15 years of personal experience in leading large business transformations, I have come to the conclusion that for an Agile transformation to succeed at scale, non-IT departments play a vital role to bring about a sustainable change. In this session, I share how business teams at the 10th largest pharmaceutical company (on a multi-year $350M transformation programme) are choosing to adopt the Agile ways of working in their offices around the world, and are creating the pull for other departments to adopt similar ways of working.

Long synopsis (optional):
Brief History: In 2018, we shared the dynamics of how a pull for agility was created with business. In 2016, we shared the initial success of adopting Agile with large IT programs, creating quick wins that responded with some naysaying, such as: “We can’t run Agile. We have globally distributed teams.” “We can’t run Agile. We have to validate our systems.” “We can’t run Agile because Agile is for application development. We deploy COTS programs.” Today: Motivated by clearly articulated organizational values and behaviors (that reflect an Agile mindset), this company’s business teams are beginning to ask how they can extend Agile & Lean practices to the work of their teams towards the next level. What is important is context: Understanding the context of how a team works, and what that work is - has been a critical step for business teams to adopt Agile practices. What works in one team does not necessarily work with another team, even in the same department. We will share: How have we made the next steps to adopt agile for business teams? When we failed, how we failed and what we learned since last year’s update? Lessons from business teams, video interviews with business leaders and their take on agile and lean mindset as they gain further maturity Summary From the pharmaceutical industry, we will share real-world stories from scientists, learning and development teams, legal & procurement teams, commercial strategy international programs and help the audience experience how we introduce the Agile mindset and practices to business teams. We will be sharing some of the details of our setbacks and challenges over the last three years and progress since our update from last year (as shared in an experience report in Agile Alliance 2018). Lessons Learned from Your Experience: How this 'Agile within Context' approach builds bridges between IT teams and business teams? It's all about stealth marketing - how to enable the business to take the next steps towards agility. Agile as a way for business teams to address rapidly changing priorities, limited resources, and time pressures & pulling IT teams. Presentation History: “Agile is Caught Not Taught” was presented at Agile Alliance. 2016 & 2018. Here is the case study from 2018: https://www.agilealliance.org/resources/experience-reports/agile-for-all-agile-is-caught-not-taught Here is the case study from 2015: http://www.scaledagileframework.com/astra-zeneca-case-study/ Here is the link to agile alliance session delivered earlier: https://agile2016.sched.com/event/6ec8/astrazeneca-agile-transformation-that-was-caught-not-taught-justine-johnston-patricia-sheehan?iframe=no&w=100%&sidebar=yes&bg=no We have delivered in Agile Cambridge (UK), Agile Manchester (UK) and Lean Agile Scotland (UK) with an excellent rating. However - we have learned a lot more, over the last three years.
