Talk description
Title:
Build-A-Bear pipeline: a practical pipeline metaphor
Short synopsis:
With our Build-A-Bear Production Pipeline, we will explore our ability to produce Bears under different team constraints, and will actively measure and compare output produced under those constraints. We'll relate this back to software delivery pipelines and gain a better understanding for why the application of Lean practices to software development is a good idea for time to market and your sanity. But it's not all fun and games - may the fastest team win!

Long synopsis (optional):
Split into teams, the session attendees will have the chance to form part of a real production line which produces paper bears. Teams will measure and compare the output they produce under different team constraints. This is a real-world production line under which one can view and measure the effects of using Lean practices and how not treating the people as the pipeline (coded by the developer, tested by the tester) can increase your output. Few people these days work in physical-product ( ie not virtual ) production lines. Lean practices can be overlooked or misunderstood because one doesn't know how to relate the ideas back to software, having never been part of a physical-product production line. This super interactive session will have teams racing to improve their production lines in order to produce the most bears and win the session! [ I have done this once before and it took about 40 minutes just to do the bear producing part, with 2 teams of 4 people. I've logged this as a 90 minute session because of this but I'm happy to try it in a shorter time frame by minimising discussion and cutting down the scenarios but I'd need some help to keep people focused. I'm prepared to bring enough bears! Although I've once this before I'm logging as a new speaker as it's been over a year since I did this ]
