Title:
The tech sprints – how Sweden's Public Service TV-broadcaster _really_ get things done
Short synopsis:
In three years SVT Interactive has scaled from five to eighteen agile development teams, and simultaneously gone from a Java monolith CMS which handled all products to a micro services based architecture with distinct features and services built to solve specific problems. But even though the teams are now formed around clearly defined products with a distinct and clear user focus, they still share some components and platforms that can't easily be handled within the products' regular maintenance and development, i.e. statistics reporting tools, our (very) scaled down CMS, UX design patterns etc. Handling cross product dependencies has become an issue in itself. Enter The Tech Sprint: twice a year, for two weeks at a time, we shuffle all the teams and gather temporary line ups around issues and themes the developers themselves set the backlog for. The Tech Sprint is organised in an Open Space format and completely driven by the developers themselves. In this session we’ll answer why we do it, how we do it and what it has lead to; from features to cultural gains to how it has helped us become more innovative – and save the company some precious license payer’s money.
